4th Doctor on "Alternate Facts"
The long running sci-fi show Doctor Who has long been a favourite of mine. There has always been an underlying political bent to the show with it speaking to issues such as post-colonialism, the environment, unions, patriarchy, Thatcherism. In fact in-show there was female prime minister nearly a decade before there was one in real life.Almost exactly 40 years ago to the day the Doctor as played by Tom Baker uttered a statement that seems more relevant now than it did then.
“You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don’t alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views.”
That resonates pretty loudly given what was in the news yesterday. I think that there is going to be so much material in the next four years. I'm expecting comedy and satire to be at their peak. This was brought to my attention by an article on io9 which has a nice clip of the DW quote too.
